Description
In 2005, UK-born ex-model and Bollywood casting agent Janie O’Connor witnessed the harsh reality faced by animals while on holiday in South Goa. Disturbed by the suffering of stray dogs, she decided to take action. At the time, South Goa was overrun with packs of wild dogs, and the local government's response to control their population was cruel and inhumane. Each year, authorities conducted an annual cull in which street and beach dogs were brutally shot, with their bodies burned. The cruelty extended to puppies, who were often drowned alive, set on fire, or otherwise brutally disposed of by local residents.
These actions stemmed from a deep-rooted fear of rabies and aggressive dog packs, but the methods employed were barbaric and ineffective. O’Connor, moved by the plight of these animals, began to seek ways to alleviate their suffering and raise awareness about their mistreatment. Her efforts marked the beginning of a compassionate movement to change attitudes and introduce more humane solutions to managing stray dog populations, paving the way for future animal welfare initiatives in the region.
